The end of the Research in Times of Corona Series
We all knew (if only hoped) that the “Research in Times of Corona” series would come to an end at some point. And it feels natural that it is now, when masks and physical restrictions seem to be disappearing; when a new virus starts getting attention in the news – the so-called monkey pox – ; and when, sadly, cities are “going back to normal”, often forgetting about some of the social and environmental achievements derived from the pandemic times, and when catastrophic and military incidents are making the recovery even harder.
Along the Research in Corona Times series I’ve shared chronicles and reflections of my research experience in such turbulent and extraordinary times. And along the different posts, I got to share the extraordinary birth, growth and consolidation of the LeuvenGymkhana action research trajectory in Leuven. The whole LeuvenGymkhana trajectory has become an example of turning adversity into opportunity, being able to build collaborative and meaningful research about governance innovation in Leuven when physical, social and mental conditions were adverse. Surely, it wouldn’t have been possible without the LeuvenGymkhana community, as it is, above all, a celebration of collective intelligence and action.
Those of you who already read the paper about the LeuvenGymkhana will remember how important reflexibility and positionality are in action research. Thus, while the Research in Times of Corona series are my individual reading of the ongoing experiences, these posts fit perfectly into the philosophy and methodology of action research in general and the SI4SD project in particular. This is so because they mean to generally share and valorize the work done and to reflect about it and its contribution to the whole research trajectory and to the reality being studied.
A further (I don’t dare say final) step of the reflections about the action research that took place in Times of Corona has been the making and now launching of the INSIST Cahier 5 titled “Governance innovation and Leuven’s Food Strategy”.
Introducing INSIST
You may be wondering, what is INSIST? http://insist.earth is a website initiated by the European Spatial Development Planning Network, who aims to bring research closer to practice and policy by organizing and facilitating workshops and publishing findings in so-called “cahiers”. Each “Cahier” is equivalent to an special issue in an academic journal, although more flexible in format, content and language, and it is not formalised as journal with an ISBN number. Each cahier has a thematic topic and is developed collectively, without aiming to build “one” narrative on the issue, but to explore and share different approaches to that topic.
The only “stable” thing of INSIST is its general structure. Every issue starts with a Prologue that frames the topic being researched and the team participating. The Dialogues section follows, where different perspectives are shared and where every subsection adds to the general discussion without meaning or needing to build or directly relate to the other contributions in the section. Then, the way to put all the contributions in perspectives and draw some conclusions and recommendations is by means of developing a Manifesto, the last section, that is less analytic and more propositive than a general “Conclusions” section would be.
From Cahier 3 on, the cahiers have been developed under the framework of the International Module in Spatial Development Planning (IMSDP module), as an experimental way of sharing the discussions and results of the action research workshop developed within this program. If you remember well, I was also part of the development of Cahier 4, as a student within the IMSDP myself in the Spring of 2020. Back then, I was just starting diving into the field of “food”, and analysed with my team how the COVID pandemic was affecting food systems and the collective understanding and experience of “food spaces”. Actually, the “Research in Times of Corona” series started reflecting on my experience within the module, remember?
Welcome to INSIST Cahier 5!
Today I am happy to present Cahier 5 titled “Governance innovation and Leuven’s Food Strategy”, which has been developed with some of the IMSDP students from 2021, those who participated in the making of the LeuvenGymkhana 2.0. Still, the content of the issue covers the whole LeuvenGymkhana trajectory up to March 2022, when the IMSDP 2022 workshop stated with a slight change of focus. Therefore, the aim of Cahier 5 is to gather and discuss the different perspectives, approaches, activities and learnings about governance innovation in Leuven during the Leuven Gymkhana action research trajectory with the broader audience, including all the people and organizations that contributed along the way and the general public.

You might be wondering, what can you find in Cahier 5? Well, as all other cahiers, it starts with the Prologue recalling what the LeuvenGymkhana aimed to do – research governance innovation in Leuven through “IMACs” (innovative multi-actor collaborations) aiming to transform the food system – and how – through action research. Within this section, the “Introduction” briefly summarized the whole trajectory and acknowledges the huge team that has been part of the LeuvenGymkhana trajectory. In the Dialogues section we have collected the outcomes in different formats collectively developed during the different LeuvenGymkhana activities and interventions. Then, the Manifesto section gathers different recommendations and reflections that were developed in different stages of the action research trajectory, also mixing different perspectives. For instance, one text recalls the conclusions and recommendations after the UGaDI seminar, while another text is more personal and shares personal reflections from Sharmada about her Plannning Master Thesis. Our recommendations for stakeholders to “recover the IMAC” in Leuven are also included. All in all, we see this cahier as a LeuvenGynkhana “archive” to which we can look back to see everything that has been done and achieved.
And now… what?
The launch of Cahier 5 not only marks the end of Research in Times of Corona blog post series, but a whole stage in the SI4SD research. Now it’s time to reflect about what has been learnt as a whole, how it relates and contributes to the general PhD trajectory and imagining the next steps to advance. This will also require setting in perspective the two contexts of research (Madrid and Leuven) and the different scales of analysis (from urban scale to individual initiatives and IMACs and even actors). Any feedback, ideas or inspirations to guide the next stage are more than welcome!

El fin de la serie “Investigando en Tiempos de Corona”
Todos sabíamos ( o al menos esperábamos) que la serie de posts “Investigando en tiempos de Corona” algún día llegaría a su fin. Y parece que ha llegado el momento para ello, ahora que las mascarillas y las restricciones físicas y sociales van desapareciendo, que un nuevo virus – la viruela del mono – empieza a ganar atención en las noticias, y cuando, desgraciadamente, las ciudades están “volviendo a la normalidad”, olvidándose a menudo de los logros sociales y medioambientales que habían derivado de estos meses de pandemia, a pesar de los nuevos incidentes catatróficos y bélicos hacen aún más difícil la recuperación…
A lo largo de la serie “Investigando en Tiempos de Corona” he ido compartiendo crónicas y reflexiones de mi experiencia investigadora en esta época tan turbulenta y extraordinaria. Y mediante los posts, he podido compartir el extraordinario nacimiento, expansión y consolidación de la trayectoria de investigación acción-participativa LeuvenGymkhana. La trayectoria entera de la LeuvenGymkhana ha resultado un ejemplo de cómo convertir la adversidad en una oportunidad, al ser capaces de construir una investigación colectiva, rica y significativa sobre la innovación en la gobernanza en Lovaina cuando las circunstancias físicas, sociales y mentales nos eran adversas. Claramente esto no habría sido posible sin la “comunidad LeuvenGymkhana”, ya que esto es, ante todo, una celebración de la inteligencia y la acción colectiva.
Aquellos de vosotros que ya hayáis leído el artículo académico sobre la LeuvenGymkhana recordaréis lo importante que son la “reflexibidad” y el “posicionamiento” en la investigación acción-participativa. Por tanto, esta serie de posts que refleja mi reflexión individual sobre el proceso se encuadra perfectamente en la filosofía de la investigación acción-participativa en general, y de mi proyecto SI4SD en particular. Esto se debe a que los posts pretenden compartir y valorizar el trabajo desarrollado y reflexionar sobre él y su contribución al proyecto de investigación en su conjunto y a la realidad que estamos estudiando.
Un paso más hacia delante (no me atrevo a decir que es el último) en las reflexiones sobre la investigación que ha tenido lugar en Tiempos de Corona ha sido la redacción y lanzamiento del cuaderno online INSIST Cahier 5 titulado “Governance innovation and Leuven’s Food Strategy” (Innovación en la Governanza y la Estrategia de Alimentación de Lovaina).
Presentando INSIST
Os estaréis preguntando: ¿qué es INSIST? http://insist.earth es una web iniciada por la Red Europea de Planeamiento y Desarrollo Espacial (European Spatial Development Planning Network), que pretende acercar la investigación a la práctica y la política organizando talleres y publicando los resultados en lo que llaman “cuadernos” (cahiers en francés). Cada “Cahier” es equivalente a una edición especial en las revistas académicas, aunque más flexibles en cuanto al formato, el contenido y el lenguaje. Además, no están formalizados con un número ISBN. Cada “cahier” tiene una temática concreta y se desarrolla de forma colaborativa, sin pretender construir una única narrativa sobre el tema, sino con el fin de explorar y compartir distintos acercamientos al problema.
Lo único “estable” en INSIST es la estructura general de cada cahier. Todos empiezan con un Prólogo (Prologue en inglés) en el que se presenta el tema que se va a tratar y el equipo que participa en el cahier. Le sigue la sección Diálogos (Dialogues en inglés), donde se comparten y aglutinan distintas perspectivas. En esta sección cada texto contribuye a la discusión en general en su conjunto sin pretender o necesitar construir sobre el anterior o se relacionarse directamente con los demás. La forma de poner todas esas paortaciones en perspectivas y construir una suerte de conclusión es mediante la redacción del Manifiesto, la última sección. Este formato es menos analítica y más propositiva de lo que lo sería una típica sección “Conclusiones” en un texto académico.
Desde el cahier 3, los cuadernos se han ido desarrollando en el marco del Módulo Internacional de Planeamiento y Desarrollo Espacial (IMSDP por sus siglas en inglés), como una forma experimental de compartir los debates y aprendizajes del taller de investigación acción-participativa en en el que participan los alumnos. Si os acordáis, yo participé en el Cahier 4 como alumna del IMSDP en 2020. Por entonces apenas estaba empezando a aterrizar en el mundo de la alimentación, y analicé con mi equipo cómo el COVID estaba afectando a los sistenas alimentarios y al entendimiento y la vivencia colectiva de los “espacios alimentarios”. De hecho, el primer post de la serie “Investigando en Tiempos de Corona” comenzó reflexionando sobre mi experiencia en el IMSDP, ¿os acordáiss?
¡Bienvenidos al INSIST Cahier 5!
Hoy estoy muy contenta de presentarios el Cuaderno o Cahier 5 de INSISIT, cuyo título traducido sería “Innovación en la gobernanza y la Estrategia de Alimentación de Lovaina”. Este cuaderno ha sido desarrollado con algunos de los alumnos del IMSDP 2021, aquellos que participaron en la preparación de la Leuven Gymkhana 2.0. Aún así, el contenido de esta edición aglutina la experiencia completa de la LeuvenGymkhana hasta marzo de 2022, cuadno el grupo IMSDP 2022 comenzó el taller con un enfoque un poco distinto. Por tanto, el objetivo del Cahier 5 es recapitular y discutir las distintas perspectivas, acercamientos, actividades y aprendizajes sobre innovación en la gobernanza en Lovaina que hemos ido desarrollando durante la trayectoria de investigación acción-participativa Leuven Gymkhana, y compartirlo con un público más general, haciéndolo accesible a todas las personas y organizaciones que participaron a lo largo de este periodo, así como al público en general.
ALERTA SPOILER! La siguiente edición de INSIST ya está en marcha para compartir la experiencia de IMSDP 2022 y la LeuvenGymkhana 4.0.
Os preguntaréis: ¿y qué puedo encontrar en el Cahier 5 exactamente? Pues, como en otros cuadernos, comenzamos con un Prólogo recapitulando el objetivo y la metodología de la LeuvenGymkhana, esto es, investigar cómo se está innovando en la governanzaa través de “collaboraciones multi-acor socialmente innovadoras” (IMACs por sus siglas en inglés) que intentan transformar el sistema alimentario, a través de investigación acción-participativa. En la sub-sección “Introducción” también resumimos la trayectoria completa y reconocemos el enorme equipo que pa participado en las distintas fases. En los Diálogos hemos recopilado los resultados de distinto tipo y formato que hemos ido desarrollando en las distintas fases e intervenciones en Lovaina. Después, el Manifiesto comparte diversas recomendaciones y reflexiones a las que fuimos llegando a lo largo del proceso. Por ejemplo, un texto recupera las conclusiones y recomendaciones colectivas sobre innovación en la gobernanza tras el Seminario UGaDI, mientras que otro texto escrito por Sharmada comparte de una manera mucho más personal su experiencia haciendo su Trabajo Fin de Máster. En esta sección también recuperamos las recomendaciones que hicimos a los actores urbanos de Lovaina para “restaurar las IMACs” durante la LeuvenGymkhana 2.0. Al fin y al cabo, vemos este Cahier como un “archivo” abierto al público en el que podemos recordar y recuperar todo lo que hemos hecho y conseguido.
Y a partir de ahora… ¿qué?
El lanzamiento del Cahier 5 no sólo marca el final de la serie de posts Investigando en Tiempos de Corona, sino el final de una etapa en el proyecto SI4SD. Ahora toca reflexionar sobre lo que he aprendido en su conjunto y sobre cómo se relaciona y contribuye todo este trabajo en mi doctorado, e imaginar cuáles deben ser los siguientespasos para seguir avanzando. Esto también requiere poner ahora en perspectiva los dos contextos de mi investigación (Madrid y Lovaina) y las distintas escalas de análisis que he ido trabajando (desde la escala urbana hasta el detalle de iniciativas y actores en particular). ¡Cualquier idea, consejo o inspiración es más que bienvenida!
