I am happy to announce the publication of a new article and chapter in my PhD in the open access journal Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems!!
In this article we share the experience and learnings of conducting field-work through transdisciplinary action research last year in Leuven, with the objective of learning more about how the local administration in Leuven collaborates with other urban actors under the framework of Leuven 2030 and the development of the Food Strategy “Voeding Verbindt” (Food Connects).
Once again, this article is a collaborative effort with my promotor Prof. Dr. Pieter Van den Broeck and fellow researcher Sharmada Nagarajan, who joined the action research trajectory to develop her Planning Master’s Thesis. As research coordinators of the trajectory, in this paper we have summed-up the process developed and analyzed it through the lens of literature on action research applied to research on social innovation. The work could not have been possible without other layers of students and researchers, specially master student Lariza Castillo and the students from the Institutional Aspects of Spatial Planning (IASP) and International Module in Spatial Development and Planning (IMSDP)]. Neither without Erik Béatse and Sarah Martens, practitioners and actors involved in the work of Leuven2030 and the development of the food strategy who brought in their experiences, knowledge and critiques from inside in the “Editorial Board” that framed and guided the research along the year.
Discussing our experience in relation to issues raised in action research literature, we summarize key dimensions, roles and tasks necessary in transdisciplinary action research to enable facilitative leadership and multi-actor collaboration and successfully drive joint problematization and transformative change. We conclude that our trajectory in Leuven developing the “LeuvenGymkhana” became a case study of innovative multi-actor collaboration in itself, and so learnings from our experience directly dialogue with and inform our empirical analysis of the performance of IMACs too. Through this realization and the analysis of our experience, we get to broader question the role of action research and researchers in urban governance innovation.
This paper is the second of two parallel articles published in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems from the work developed last year. While this one reflects on “action research” as a methodology and how we applied it in Leuven in the school year 2020-21, its sibling focuses on our learnings about IMACs in Leuven.

En este artículo compartimos nuestra experiencia y nuestros aprendizajes desarrollando investigación acción-participativa transdisciplinar en Lovaina el año pasado, con el fin de aprender más sobre cómo la administración local colabora con otros actores urbanos dentro del marco de la organización Leuven 2030 y en el desarrollo de la estrategia de alimentación “Voeding Verbindt” (La alimentación conecta).
Una vez más, este artículo es el resultado de un trabajo colaborativo con mi tutor Prof. Dr. Pieter Van den Broeck y mi colega investigadora Sharmada Nagarajan que se unió a la investigación acción-participativa para desarrollar su Proyecto Fin de Master. Como investigadores coordinando la investigación, en este artículo resumimos el proceso que desarrollamos y lo analizamos desde la perspectiva de la literatura sobre investigación acción-participativa aplicada a la investigación de la innovación social. Sin embargo, este trabajo no habría sido posible sin otros muchos alumnos e investigadores , especialmente la estudiante de máster Lariza Castillo y los alumnos del curso “Institutional Aspects of Spatial Planning” (IASP) y del Módulo “International Module in Spatial Development and Planning” (IMSDP)]. Pero, sobre todo, no habría sido posible sin Erik Béatse y Sarah Martens, agentes involucrados en el trabajo de Leuven2030 y en el desarrollo de la estrategia de alimentación que se unieron a nosotros compartiendo su experiencia, conocimiento y críticas desde dentro en el “Panel editorial” que guió la investigación a lo largo del año.
Al analizar nuestra experiencia según los temas discutidos en la literatura sobre investigación acción-participativa, resumimos las dimensiones, roles y tareas clave necesarias al desarrollar una investigación acción-participativa transdisciplinar asegurando que se cuidan todos los roles que faciliten el proceso y logrando un verdadero y exitoso proceso de colaboración en la problematización y acción colectiva. Al final, concluimos que nuestra experiencia desarrollando la “LeuvenGymkhana” se convirtió en un caso de estudio de collaboración multi-actor socialmente innovadora en sí. Como tal, los aprendizajes de nuestra experiencia informan el análisis de los casos de estudio de Lovaina que estábamos investigando. Al darnos cuenta de ésto y reflexionar sobre ello, cuestionamos de manera más amplia el rol de la investigación acción-participativa y de los investigadores que forman parte de ella en la innovación del a gobernanza urbana.
Este artículo es el segundo de dos artículos que se han publicado en paralelo en la revista científica Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems sobre nuestro trabajo el año pasado. Mientras que éste reflexiona sobre la investigación acción-participativa como metodología y nuestra experiencia aplicándola en el curso 2020-21, su “hermano” se centra en los “resultados” y nuestros aprendizajes sobre IMACs en Leuven.
