New Publication: Exploring the Emergence of Innovative Multi-Actor Collaborations toward a Progressive Urban Regime in Madrid (2015–2019)

Today we are proud to share the new article published in the open access scientific journal Sustainability. This article is already the first chapter of the research PhD Thesis and lays the basis on the subsequent research about innovative multi-actor collaborations in relation to democratic innovation, social innovation and urban governance transformations, in this case, by analysing urban regime change in Madrid during the “government of change” led by Ahora Madrid between 2015 and 2019.

This paper is the first of hopefully many international and interdisciplinar collaborations with my two co-promotors, co-authors in the paper, and learns from the research trajectory of both. On the one hand, Prof. Dr. Rosa de la Fuente has been researching about urban governance and urban regime change in Madrid and introduced in the world of political sciences and political geography from the Faculty of Political Sciences and Sociology at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. On the other, Prof. Dr. Pieter Van den Broeck, head of the Planning & Development Unit at KU Leuven has guided me though the trajectory of the research on social innovation started by Prof. Dr. Frank Moulaert and the methodological application of action research.

Together, we have combined perspectives on urban governance from different perspectives and applied them in the analysis of innovative collaborations between the local administration and other urban actors in Madrid, which we conceptualize as “innovative multi-actor collaborations” (IMACs). In the article, we identify windows of opportunity and institutional mechanisms that have made these IMACs in Madrid possible and analyse their implications in urban regime change towards a progressive regime.

Hoy tenemos el honor de compartir el nuevo artículo en inglés publicado en la revista científica de acceso abierto (open access) Sustainability. Este artículo supone ya el primer capítulo de mi tesis y asienta las bases sobre futuras investigaciones sobre colaboraciones multi-actor innovadoras en relación con la innovación democrática, la transformación de la gobernanza urbana y la innovación social. En concreto, en el artículo aplicamos este marco teórico al análisis del cambio de régimen urbano en Madrid entre los años 2015 y 2019, durante el “gobierno del cambio” liderado por Ahora Madrid.

Este artículo es la primera de esperemos muchas colaboraciones internacionales e inter-disciplinares con mis dos co-tutores del doctorado, ambos co-autores en el artículo, y bebe de las trayectorias de ambos. Por un lado, Prof. Dr. Rosa de la Fuente tiene una larga experiencia de investigación investigando sobre gobernanza urbana y cambio de régimen urbano en Madrid, y es mi mentora dentro del mundo de las ciencias políticas y de la geografía políticadesde la Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociología de la Univesidad Complutense de Madrid. Por otro lado, Prof. Dr. Pieter Van den Broeck, director del grupo de investigación Planning & Development Unit en KU Leuven me ha ido guiando en el estudio de la innovación social iniciado por Prof. Dr. Frank Moulaert y la aplicación práctica de la metodología acción-participativa.

Juntos, hemos combinado distintas perspectivas sobre la gobernanza urbana en un marco teórico que hemos aplicado para analizar las colaboraciones innovadoras que han tenido lugar involucrando a la administración local y otros actores urbanos en Madrid, lo que hemos conceptualizado como “colaboraciones multi-actor innovadoras” (IMACs en sus siglas en inglés). En el artículo identificamos las ventanas de oportunidad y los mecanismos institucionales que han posibilitado la experimentación con estas IMACs en Madrid y analizamos sus implicaciones en la transformación del régimen urbano hacia un régimen urbano progresista.
